The Conspirators

(Clockwise, starting from upper left) John Wilkes Booth, Lewis Powell, David Herold, Michael O’Laughlin, John Surratt, Edman Spangler, Samuel Arnold and George Atzerodt.
(Center) Mary Surratt.

The various co-conspirators. Powell, Herold, Atzerodt and Mary Surratt were tried and found guilty of plotting to kill the President. All four were hanged (Mary Surratt was the first woman executed in America). The rest (including Dr. Samuel Mudd, not pictured, but excluding John Surratt), were given lesser sentences; partly because they were only involved in the failed kidnapping plot or because they were not directly involved in the assassination. Only John Surratt escaped punishment by fleeing the country; he was later pardoned, however his mother was not so fortunate. And Booth, of course, was shot and killed against orders, taking his secrets to the grave.
